Ilustra_Cidades - ETIC International Award for Illustration 2011

The first edition of the Illustration award organized took place in 2005 under the theme Ilustra_te (self-portrait), and since its start the success stood out in the illustrators community, namely the portuguese one.

Now in its 6th edition and confirming the recognition of illustration as form of expression and creativity, ETIC (Escola Técnica de Imagem e Comunicação) organizes the Ilustra_Cidades - ETIC International Award for Illustration 2011 under the theme Cidades (Cities).

Entries (original and unpublished) must be sent in digital format exclusively in the following sizes: 50x70cm, 70x50cm and 50x50cm, together with an updated curriculum, to ilustra@etic.pt . The file size cannot exceed 8MB. The files must be sent until June 30.
Each participant can submit up to two files.

A juri will then select 30 works and their authors will be made public on July 15 at ETIC's website.

The selected works must be sent on CD support, with a maximum resolution of 300DPI to the following adress:

Utrecht Art Supplies 3rd Annual Art Competition

Open to legal residents of the United States, its territories and possessions, who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry (exceptions apply), Utrecht Art Supplies, in partnership with Studio Incamminati and sponsorship of Interweave Press, LLC through American Artist magazine, welcomes all artists to submit their drawings, paintings or sculptures (computer – generated art or fine art photography entries for this competition will not be accepted. However sculptural works of art will be permissible as digital file entries) for the Utrecht Art Supplies 3rd Annual Art Competition.

With over $16,000 in prizes and honourable mentions awarded for a variety of categories, styles and materials, winners in each category will receive $1,500, $750 and $500 Utrecht ArtSmart gift cards respectively for first, second and third place.

My Feenix Art Contest

My Feenix art contest is opened to adults and well as high school students From continental United States, Alaska or Hawaii and offers an award of $10 000 to the winner. The challenge is to depict a character, Feenix, from New York Times best selling Urban Fantasy Novel, Blood Trinity. Three categories of art are accepted, 2-d traditional art, digital art and 3-d art. Each category is limited to 1500 entries. Deadline to enter this contest is July 9th.

This will be a juried competition and all art will initially be judged to choose the finalists. Finallists will then be displayed at live gallery event in Atlanta, Georgia that will be open to the public and covered by the media. During this gallery event the final judging will be done.

Scoring will be based on the following criteria:

• Physical representation closest to the character in the book (10 points)
• Capturing Feenix’s personality (10 points)
• Creative flair (5 points)
• Quality of art (5 points)

Painting on the Edge 2011

Submissions for the 9th Annual Painting on the Edge are open until June 3, 2011 11:59 pm PDT (Pacific Daylight Time).

Painting on the Edge is an open, international, juried exhibition of original paintings, drawings and printmaking in any media, open to all living artists worldwide.
Photographs, giclées, posters and any other type of mechanical reproduction will not be selected.

Submited artwork must conceived and executed solely by the entrant, without the supervision of an instructor, and completed within two years of the entry deadline.

All work must be for sale and priced in Canadian funds with intent to sell. A commission of 35% will be retained by the FCA on all sold work. Artist’s price must include this commission.

There's a participation fee of CAN$25.00 per work (non-members must add CAN$5.00 per work) and each entrant can participate with up to three works.

Selected works will be exhibited between August 16 and September 4, 2011

Art Takes London 2011

Art Takes London 2011 is an art contest open to all artists around the world, with particular focus on emerging ones, who are 13 years of age or older as of the date of entry (minors under the age of 18 may enter online by providing their parent or legal guardian’s e-mail address).

The organizers are looking for innovative works including: Painting, Sculpture, Illustration, Design, Photography, Film, Video, Performance, Installation, Sound, New Media.
Conceptual proposals are also welcome.

Those who wish to participate in Art Takes London 2011 can do it by using the online submission form. Price for entry is $10 per image, you can submit 8 or more images for a flat rate of $79 (maximum of 20 images).
Each entry must be the original work of the entrant, and entrant must be the sole owner of the copyright of such entry.

All online applicants will receive an online portfolio and the entries submitted by the Initial Deadline (11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, May 27, 2011) will be eligible for the People's Choice Award (judged entirely online and does not affect the selection of the Grand Prize winner).

Caroline Lees with "Trafalgar Square" is the Winner of The Sunday Telegraph Watercolour Competition

After the announcement early today of thirteen finalists, the judges of The Sunday Telegraph watercolour competition, under the theme The Great British Landscape, have selected the overall winner together with another three finalists.

The winning work is a 24in by 34in watercolour entitled "Trafalgar Square" by the British artist Caroline Lees. The painting depicts the Trafalgar Square with the silhouette of London in the background, placing in evidence two of its four lion statues sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer and set on granite plinths .

When The Sunday Telegraph launched its Watercolour Competion under the theme The Great British Landscape in the begining of February, it stated in its terms & conditions: "The winner will announced and their work published in The Sunday Telegraph on Sunday, April 24, 2011."

As the readers of The Art Inquirer know, the selection of the winning watercolour was first postponed to the 8th of May due to the high number of entries in the compettion, then again to the 15th of May "due to moving news stories ."

Today is the 15th of May and the news that we have from the newspaper at this time is about the 13 finalists from its watercolour competition and their paintings .

We continue not knowing who is the winner of The Sunday Telegraph's The Great British Landscape watercolour competition, unless it's mentioned on the printed edition and not online at the time of the publishing of this article.

When will the winner of The Sunday Telegraph Watercolour Competition be announced ?

When The Sunday Telegraph launched their watercolour competition under the theme "The Great British Landscape", it was mentioned that the winner would be announced on 24 April 2011. However the excuse of a high number of entries caused to move the eventual announcement to the 8th of May, according to information from an official source.

This Saturday, May 7th, The Art Inquirer was contacted by the same source and can advance first hand that "due to moving news stories" the results of the watercolour competition are now being moved to next Sunday, May 15th 2011.

The Sunday Telegraph Watercolour Competition: the winner will be announced and their work published on May 8th

On the 4th of February The Sunday Telegraph launched a watercolour competition under the theme "The Great British Landscape", to coincide with Tate Britain’s blockbuster show, Watercolour.

It was previewed that the winner would be announced and their work published in The Sunday Telegraph on Sunday, April 24, 2011, however The Art Inquirer has been informed by an official source that due to the very high number of entries, which subsequently took rather a long time to go through, the winning watercolour will be published on the 8th of May.

The Second Annual Joseph Devon Fan Art Contest

Writer Joseph Devon is offering a choice of one of three great prize packages for the winner of The Second Annual Joseph Devon Fan Art Contest.

Those interested in participating must create an original work of art based on the "Probability Angels" novel and e-mail the content to joe@josephdevon.com with “Contest” in the subject line until July 15th, 2011.

Entrants can complete their works in any medium as long as it can be sent by e-mail, with exception of written words, and submit as many as they like.

A few weeks after the deadline, Joseph and a panel of judges will pick one work as the Grand Prize Winner, who will be able to choose from *EITHER* 1) a Wacom Tablet *OR* 2) a copy of Photoshop Lightroom as well as this color calibration thing as well as a Spyder3 Elite *OR* 3) a copy of Adobe Illustrator.

If the winner lives in an area where the above prizes are non-functioning or impossible to obtain then they will be compensated with a prize of similar design and value.

People & Planet International Photography Competition 2011

The People & Planet International Photography Competition is open to amateur and professional photographers worldwide and will offer the opportunity to 53 participants to have their photos published in the 2012 People & Planet: Social Justice & Environment Diary & Calendar and achieve international recognition.

Photos submited to this competition should transmit "good news" stories about social-justice or the environment, and be at least at 300 dpi resolution, supplied in JPEG format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB.

Although minimal photoshop-ing may be acceptable, its obvious use will usually lead to exclusion of the photo.

Entrants may submit up to 4 photos (each image in a separate e-mail). All submitted photos must be accompanied by 3-5 sentences describing the image and the social-justice or environment issues which are raised by it. Do not submit images that were submitted to this competition in previous years.

The participation in the People & Planet International Photography Competition is free.

Entrants may e-mail their entries to peopleandplanet@peopleandplanet.org.au before 31 May 2011. Read the rules of entry carefully.

Winners will be selected by the competition judges Michael Cebon (People & Planet Editor) and Rodney Dekker (Australian Photographer).

A 1st Prize in the value A$1,300 and a 2nd Prize in the value of A$350, both in cash, will be awared to the two best photos. The author of the photo to be used on the cover of the People & Planet Diary & Calendar 2012 will receive the Diary Cover Prize: A$350 cash.

NY ART MARATHON - Spring 2011

Open to all artists working in any media and genre, including traditional and digital, the NY ART MARATHON is an international art competition which will offfer its 10 finalists the opportunity to participate in a group show in New York City during the month of July 2011.

The most voted-for artist by the public will receive the People's Award and will be featured for a year on the main webpage of THE NY ART MARATHON. Each week, selected participating artists will enter an online group show with a review of their submitted artworks by the curator.

The overall winner, chosen by the juror, will receive a $3000 cash prize.
All entrants will have their works exhibited in an online group show as a reward for participating.

Participants can submit up to 3 images with 72 dpi and no more than 700 KB (there is a non-refundable entry fee of $25 for the first image and $15 for every next image).

The submission deadline is June 15th, 2011, after which 50 semi-finalists, selected by the juror, will be voted by the public the week after the deadline. Public voting goes for one week.

Finalists will be notified by July 1st, 2011 and shipping arrangements will be made.

Each finalist will exhibit one work of the size no bigger than 40"x60" in a group show in the New York gallery district.

The artwork should be signed and labeled on the reverse side with its title, media, size and year, as well as with the artist's name, date of birth and country.

Shipping expenses to and from New York will be supported by the NY ART MARATHON.

The theme for this Spring 2011 edition of the NY ART MARATHON is "NEW VISION = NEW WORLD. Break old canons, create new art" and will be juried and curated by David Gibson, a well-known NY art critic and curator with experience in teaching and lecturing in rewoned institutions.

David Rowe wins the World Press Cartoon Sintra 2011

The Australian cartoonist David Rowe is the overall winner of the 7th edition of the World Press Cartoon , with the work "Wikileaks and Uncle Sam", published last December in "The Sun-Herald". Besides winning the Grand Prix, David was also awarded the first prize in the Editorial Cartoon category.

In the Gag Category, the Brazilian Samuca was awarded for his work about pedophilia in the Catholic Church, published in the "Diário de Pernambuco". Other renowned names that are participating in this saloon, whose works will be on view after April 9th together with those of selected artists, are Pawel Kuczynski from Poland who conquered the second place in the Editorial Cartoon category with "Made in China" and the Mexican Alecus, who portrayed the famous Chilean miners who got burried last year and managed to survive, in his work "Chilean Miners".

João Vaz de Carvalho, with a portrait of D. João I, and Santiagu, with a drawing of Mother Teresa of Calcuta, both from Portugal, were respectively awarded the first and third places in the Caricature category. The second place in Caricature was attributed to the Cuban cartoonist Ángel Boligán with a drawing of Julian Assange.

The awards ceremony took place this April 8th at the Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval in Sintra.

This year's edition received 822 drawings by 462 authors from several nationalities, of which 401 were selected during February. The selected cartoonists are from Albania, Australia, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Poland and Portugal were selected during February.

The juri was composed by António Antunes, saloon Director and cartoonist at the Expresso newspaper, Ralph Steadman, an illustrator and cartoonist from Great-Britain, the Canadian artist and illustrator Anita Kunz, Alessandro Gatto, Italian painter, illustrator and graphic artist, and the Belgian cartoonist, illustrator and plasticine modeler Cecile Bertrand.

Considered one of the most important events of its genre worldwide, the World Press Cartoon Sintra 2011 can be visited at the Sintra Museu de Arte Moderna from April 9th to June 30th 2011, Mon-Sun, 10h00-18h00, including holidays. Admitance is free.

Your Artwork Featured in a Subway Station

In partnership with Art Bellow and with Ben Moore's curatorship, Body Of Art is offering a unique opportunity to artists worldwide to have their artwork projected on a 3 metre screen in London's Liverpool Street station on the Central line platform (westbound).

Art in Motion at the Liverpool Street Station

Artists who have video material displaying their creative process have the opportunity to have it showcased on 3 meter wide digital projection screens on the Liverpool Street tube station Central line (westbound platform) during 2 weeks from mid April.

Curated by Art Below, 'Art in Motion' will be a series of 1 minute clips featuring a scope of different artists actually in the process of creating their own work.
Although the versions that will be screened in the London Underground will be silent and no longer than one minute, these restriction do not apply in the online gallery.
The finished works will also be featured as a billboard poster in a major London station.

Artists can submit their videos to be considered for the 'Art in Motion' series to artinmotion@artbelow.org.uk with a link to the video online (ie youtube, vimeo, facebook).

Deadline is 28th March 2011.

The Sunday Telegraph Watercolour Competition

Coinciding with Tate Britain’s blockbuster show, Watercolour, The Sunday Telegraph launched a watercolour competition for non-professional artists residents of the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland aged 18 years or over (carefuly read the terms and conditions).

The chosen theme is The Great British Landscape and the entrants are invited to submit jpegs of their works by e-mail (image files must be 300 dpi and be between 1MB and 2MB) or send photographs by post, in both cases accompanied by a brief description.
Only one photograph per entry and one entry per person will be accepted.
Paintings that have won any previous competitions are not eligible.

A selection of ten finalists will be contacted on April 6, 2011 and asked to submit their original work for the final round of judging.
The winner will be announced and their work published in The Sunday Telegraph on Sunday, April 24, 2011.
A beautifully crafted mahogany box of Winsor & Newton art materials worth £445, courtesy of Cass Art will be attributed to the winner and the other runners-up will receive each £10 Cass gift vouchers.

The Epson International Pano Awards 2011

Dedicated to the art of panoramic photography, the Epson International Pano Awards is the largest and most important competition of its kind showcasing the works of panoramic photographers worldwide.

The second edition of the Epson International Pano Awards is open to all professional and amateur photographers worldwide and will offer a total of US$25,000 in cash and prizes.
Each overall winner will receive $1000 in cash and other great prizes.
Category winners and runer-ups will also receive cash awards and other prizes.

Entrants can participate is three categories: Open Awards, Amateurs Awards and VR/360 awards, each being divided in specific sub-categories, with the exception of the VR/360 which free. Fees are applicable and there is no limit for the number of entries.

Regular entries are open until Friday 15th of April 2011, with a late entry period between the 16th of April and 30th of April. Late entry fees will apply. Before submiting their entries, participants are advised to read the competition rules.

13th International Portrait Competition, 2011

Organized by the Portrait Society of America, the 13th Annual International Portrait Competition is open to all artists, members and non-members.
Continuing the tradition of its previous editions, the competition aims to showcase the finest in international portraiture and figurative art, today.

More than $50,000 in prizes will be distributed, as well as awards for each of the 15 top artworks, including cash and other prizes.
Selected artists will be given recognition in the International Artist Magazine, the Art of the
Portrait® Journal and on the Portrait Society's website.
The winner of the William Draper Grand Prize will be featured in an article in International Artist Magazine and receive cash prize of $5,000 sponsored by Jack Richeson & Co.
The top 15 finalists will receive complementary tuition to The Art of the Portrait® Conference 2012.

Entrants can submit up to three digital entries on one CD, each accompanied by a 4" x 6" print labeled in the same format.
Artists must present independtly created works completed after March 2008, showing an original design and concept, and never having received an award in a previous national competition.
All entries must be postmarked on or before March 1, 2011.

There's a non-refundable fee of $45 to enter the 13th International Portrait Competition, which

Finalists are required to register for the conference and be in attendance with their original work to win a top prize. Tuition is $395 for members/$455 for non-members.

13th Art On The Streets - Colorado Springs 2011

The call for entries to the 13th Annual Downtown Colorado Springs Art On The Streets is open until March 1, 2011.

Art On The Strrets is a yearlong venue where the works of emerging as well as celebrated artists from across the nation, enliven the Downtown Colorado Springs cityscape and urban experience.

The artworks can be created in any medium and format suitable for outdoor exhibition, where obviously the quality, durability and safety of the piece must be a common denominator.

Entrants may enter two works, with a suggested minimum dimension of 3 feet, vertical or horizontal, and scaled to outdoor spaces, submiting their proposals in one packet (no proposals sent via email) in a Word or .pdf document with JPEG images burned to a CD or DVD.

There's a non-refundable entry fee of $25.

Selected artists, will be granted $400 for installation assistance and one night complementary lodging for attendance at opening reception on June 24, 2011.

Three prizes of $15,000, $7,500 and $2,500 each, will also be awarded and artists will have photos of their artwork and biographies included in a brochure.

The artwork will be exhibited until May 2012 throughout the 40-square-block downtown district, with the majority of pieces clustered in the busiest 10 to 15 block core.
