"The Biggest Photography Exhibition in the World" Lisbon 2011

The second edition of “A Maior Exposição Fotográfica do Mundo” (The Largest Photography Exhibition in the World) takes place in Lisbon during all the month on June 2011.

Counting with the participation of national and international photographers, including some prize winners, the exhibition will show their works throughout the city of Lisbon, in places like St. George's Castle (Castelo de São Jorge), Chiado, Augusta Street (Rua Augusta), Palace's Terrace (Terreiro do Paço) and Monument to Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos).

Between the 1st and 30th of June, from 10h00 to 20h00, a free bus (Expo Bus) covers all the event's itinerary Belém - Cais do Sodré - Terreiro do Paço - Santa Apolónia - Rua do Comércio - Restauradores - Belém.
The departure takes place at Belém (Padrão dos Descobrimentos / Monument to Discoveries) at 10h00, 13h30, 16h00 and 18h30.
The Expo Bus will stop for 10 minutes at each of the 18 exhibition nodes and visitors will be able to hop on and off at each of the stops as they wish.

Art to Rave About. Self-Portrait Made Up Of Ecstacy Pills By Artist Scott Blake.

Artist Scott Blake, a Savannah College of Art and Design graduate, specializes in unique forms of digital mosaic and bar code art. A few years back, he created this self-portrait comprised of Ravers favorite drug, MDMA or 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, more commonly known as Ecstacy or simply "e".






Scott collected all of the XTC pill images from Dancesafe.org, a harm reduction organization promoting safety within the rave community.

"Marilyn Monroe: A Última Sessão" by Bert Stern at the Centro Cultural de Cascais

Presented by the Fundação D.Luís I in partnership with Terra Explêndida - Produção Cultural, the photographic exhibition "Marilyn Monroe: A Última Sessão" (Marilyn Monroe: The Last Sitting) brings to the public 60 photos that Bert Stern selected from his book "The Last Sitting" edited in 1982.

During the three sessions that Stern had with Marilyn in the year of 1962 for the Vogue magazine, he took 2571 photos, some of them never fully revealed since the actress didn't enjoy them and defaced them with a cross directly on the film.

The selected photos shown at this exhibition are from the last session, some six weeks before Marilyn's death, and are part of the private collection of NY based Leon and Michaela Constantiner.

"Marilyn Monroe: A Última Sessão" by Bert Stern can be visited until the 17th of July 2011 at the Centro Cultural de Cascais, Portugal. Admitance is free.

50 years will have passed in 2012 since the death Norma Jean Mortenson.

El Museo del Barrio honours Mario Testino

Mario Testino, one of the world's most acclaimed celebrities and fashion photographers, will be presented with the El Museo's lifetime achievement award.
Especially created by the artists of Asprey of London, the sterling silver tray engraved with the 35 signatures of his dearest friends and coleagues, will be held to the photographer by Kate Winslet during the El Museo del Barrio New York gala 2011 to be held on Thursday, May 26, at Cipriani 42nd Street, New York.

The award celebrates Mario Testino's 30-year artistic career, not only as the celebrated photographer but also as the human being who has supported many charitable causes.

Born in Lima, Peru, in the year of 1954, Mario Testino moved to London in 1976 after completing his studies. The he pursued a career in photography that led him to work with some of the most famous fashion magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue and V.
Testino has contributed to the portfolios of leading fashion brands and haute couture houses, including Estée Lauder, Lancôme and Versace.

Celebrity subjects have most famously included Diana, Princess of Wales and her sons; actresses such as Emma Watson, Julia Roberts, Kim Basinger; models including Claudia Schiffer, Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Moss; performers Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, among others.

The photographer has published nine books of his work and edited another dedicated to Peruvian art and artists.
His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.

Chaired by Yaz and Valentín Hernández and Alex González and Raúl Martínez, El Museo del Barrio's 2011 Gala will benefit New York's leading Latino institution El Museo del Barrio (also known as El Barrio).

El Museo is a center of cultural pride on New York’s Museum Mile, holding a permanent collection of over 6,500 objects spanning more than 800 years of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino art includes pre-Columbian Taíno artifacts, traditional arts, twentieth-century drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations, as well as prints, photography, documentary films, and video.

The museum is also a dynamic artistic, cultural, and community gathering place, with cultural celebrations, and educational programs.

The National Portrait Gallery presents Hoppé Portraits: Society, Studio & Street

Since February the National Portrait Gallery (London, UK) is showing a retrospective of one of the most important photographers of the first half of the twentieth century: Emil Otto Hoppé.

Featuring 150 works, some of them previously unseen, the exhibition includes Hoppé’s strikingly modernist portraits of society figures and important personalities from the worlds of literature, politics and the arts, such as George Bernard Shaw, Margot Fonteyn, Albert Einstein, Vita Sackville-West and members of the royal family.

This is also the first exhibition to combine Hoppé’s extraordinary photographs of the famous with those he made outside the studio, in the street.

E.O. Hoppé (14 April 1878 – 9 December 1972) was born in Munich and resident in Britain from 1902, where he began photographing professionally in 1907.

The Hoppé Portraits: Society, Studio & Street exhibition can be visited until 30 May 2011.

Dreaming Of The Dark Side: A Sexy Star Wars Photo Editorial For Star Wars Day!

As odd as it may seem to some, there are people who find Star Wars very arousing. Sure the lightsabers are phallic and there's a lot of heavy breathing, but canoodling with a Stormtrooper? “Dreaming of the Dark Side” is a photographic editorial of a young girl - dressed as a Twi'lek- lustfully dreaming about Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper, too.

Recently shot by Marie-Louise Cadosch of Marc & Louis photography (as a tribute to the photographer's Star Wars-loving sister Kathrin), the editorial stars the beautiful Maura Waller from OPTION Models dreamily cavorting with members of the Dark Side.














Swiss Garrison provided the photographers with Darth Vader and the stormtroopers and the makeup was done by Lilith Amrad.

People & Planet International Photography Competition 2011

The People & Planet International Photography Competition is open to amateur and professional photographers worldwide and will offer the opportunity to 53 participants to have their photos published in the 2012 People & Planet: Social Justice & Environment Diary & Calendar and achieve international recognition.

Photos submited to this competition should transmit "good news" stories about social-justice or the environment, and be at least at 300 dpi resolution, supplied in JPEG format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB.

Although minimal photoshop-ing may be acceptable, its obvious use will usually lead to exclusion of the photo.

Entrants may submit up to 4 photos (each image in a separate e-mail). All submitted photos must be accompanied by 3-5 sentences describing the image and the social-justice or environment issues which are raised by it. Do not submit images that were submitted to this competition in previous years.

The participation in the People & Planet International Photography Competition is free.

Entrants may e-mail their entries to peopleandplanet@peopleandplanet.org.au before 31 May 2011. Read the rules of entry carefully.

Winners will be selected by the competition judges Michael Cebon (People & Planet Editor) and Rodney Dekker (Australian Photographer).

A 1st Prize in the value A$1,300 and a 2nd Prize in the value of A$350, both in cash, will be awared to the two best photos. The author of the photo to be used on the cover of the People & Planet Diary & Calendar 2012 will receive the Diary Cover Prize: A$350 cash.

All 53 winners will receive a free copy of the 2012 People & Planet Diary.

Established in 2007, People & Planet raises funds, namely through their 100% Carbon Offset printed on Monza Recycled paper calendar, and supports the work of Australian environment and social justice organisations, helping create a more just and environmentally sustainable world.

Mounted Life. Stunning Taxidermy Photography By Danielle van Ark.

The Mounted Life is a series of photographs by Royal Academy of Arts graduate Danielle van Ark. She visited the storage and archives of museums around the world and found animals in surroundings and environments so far from their natural habitats she was struck by the inherent contrast and photographed them.

The series makes the most of the juxtaposition of wildlife and industrial imagery. The images are disturbing, funny, haunting, confrontational and even touching in their composition and subject matter.

Danielle van Ark graduated in 2005 from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Since then she has been living and working in New York and the Netherlands. The artist now wields backstage access to 33 museums across Europe and North America, and she aims to package the entire collection into a book.
